How does Hill define reality TV? Describe his definitions in the context of a contemporary Reality TV show.

Hill (2005) defines the several ways which systems are using in reality TV. Basically, most of the reality TV shows put Surveillance footage, unscripted dialogue, hand-held cameras on their shows. It is up to the directors and normally they show realistic aspects to audiences. These days, reality TV shows have lots of themes such as audition form, survivor form, game shows, and talent shows and so on. According to Hill (2005), the category of reality TV is commonly used to describe a range of popular factual programming. There are a variety of styles and techniques associated with Reality TV, such as non-professional actors, seeing events unfold as they are happening in front of the camera…Recently, Reality TV is associated with anything and everything, from people to pets, from birth to death. As like he said, it is hard to define for one definition what the reality TV is. Also in Korea, we have a reality TV shows and a number of reality TV shows have been increasing steadily and getting popular. The shows are associated with everything as Hill mentioned such as growing baby, virtually marriage, dancing and singing survival, traveling, and making clothes competition etc. The reality TV shows casts could be everyone which is ordinary people, comedian, fashion designer, actor, or singer. They just show their natural self in the shows.
Not even in Korea, it can be seen from Australia, America and all around the world.
“There is no one definition of reality programming, but many competing definitions of what has come to be the reality genre” (Hills, 2005).
In Korea, we have reality TV show like British program ‘Survivor’. The show use all these techniques to give the audience a strong sense of reality making them believe that the casts are actually somewhere in local like desert, jungle, the North Pole, or the South Pole. The casts live at there around a week without any civilization stuffs and food. They just find out shelters or foods by themselves in the wild.
Keeping this in mind, Hill (2005) also stated that the reality TV has been constantly changing over the past decade.
Now to show what Hill (2005) meant by how the reality TV has changed, I will compare the programs with the 1966 film Cathy Come Home. Actually this is the only one previous reality TV show that I know. The reality of the film amazed me many ways such as sounds of people, traffic, trucks and children's cries. When I see this, I could know it is not for high rating program or just for fun. The program taught me something that I didn’t know before I see that, not even to me probably to all students. In the program, the camera following the main character’s movements and it zooming the characters at the right timing. It was not artificial directing like these days reality TV shows. Another difference is sound. They did not add any sounds effects or dramatically modify the film. On the other hand, nowadays shows are focus on high ratings and just for entertainments. Also for me the sounds effects are really important to feel realism and authenticity. I think all of reality TV show that I’m watching now makes me kind of normal person.
Looking at these examples, Hills statement becomes clear regarding how reality TV has changed in the past decade, going from docudrama style film into a somewhat pointless range of reality TV shows which portray nothing but edited and scripted dialogue only to benefit the entertainment industry to achieve higher ratings using the techniques identified by Hill(2005).
“There is no one definition of reality programming, but many competing definitions of what has come to be the reality genre” (Hills, 2005). I really agree this sentence. Even now lots of reality TV shows have showing in television, and many people have finding their tastes thorough many shows. The shows are not same and it will associate with other themes to catch audience’s ears and eyes.

  1. Your point is good. i agree with you. In Korea, we can see the genre has changed a lot from the various subjects that the reality TV is dealing with nowadays.

  2. Good. Thanks Sodam. Yes, the range of 'reality' shows seems to be growing steadily all over the world - interesting to hear that is the same in Korea. Great to see that you recognised many of the essential differences between early Docudramas (like Cathy come home) and modern reality TV. Yes, the modern series try to create the same sense of drama and story-telling (narrative) using non-actors and largely non-scripted material. The most powerful narrative tool they have available is the edit-suite. Good.
